PPC17: The Inspiration & Sketchwork

here we are again! We’re at the front-end of that  l-o-n-g  process that eventually culminates in a brand new bag pattern! It’s exciting, and scary, and fraught with possibilities all at the same time and I especially love this part of the process for these reasons and many more!

So let’s jump right in now and let me you a little about what I was thinking for this design!

First of all… We get a LOT of requests for backpack patterns, particularly of late even though we already have the Odyssey Backpack and the Cosmo Convertible (which can be used as a backpack) in our line, but I’m dis-inclined to add anything to our line unless I can’t bring it in a new & interesting way, with a special twist or two!

But here’s the deal, I’ve noticed of late that folks (both men AND women) have taken to wearing their backpacks on their chests rather than their backs, but you know what?… It’s not usually a very good “look”!  🙁

But what if I could come up with a design that looked more, shall we say… streamlined?

And what if it looked equally streamlined whether it was worn on your chest OR your back?

And what if instead of two shoulder straps there was only one so that maybe it could ALSO be worn as a shoulder bag too?

And what if there were SEVERAL storage options that were totally accessible yet secure? Would that be of interest to you?

So let me give you a little tour!

Here’s what I’m thinking at the outset! I think a tall and roomy zippered pouch in the center of the bag would be a great place to start and a cool storage pocket in FRONT of the zippered pouch would be the perfect place for a cell phone! And to provide extra security for both of these areas, I’d like to extend the phone pocket area upward so it clips in place with a side release buckle.

And to top it all off, I think a zippered pocket on the back would be perfect for a passport, boarding passes and other sensitive items!

So… it’s YOUR turn!

I’d LOVE to know what your reaction is to my ideas for our new design at this point in the process?  Does it strike you as a project you’d be interested in and if so, what features would you like to see included? And remember, we love reading your comments and answering your questions too, so please feel free to leave either or both in the space provided below.

  1. Very cool! What size would this be?

  2. So excited you find this interesting Dawn! We’ll be sharing details like that very soon in this new series! Do stay tuned? 🙂

  3. Hi Kat – awesome design! When I travel, I always bring a reusable water bottle. Is there a side pocket for that?

  4. I would love this design. I have taken to carrying a Kavu bag because it’s handier than a traditional bag but I love your designs and all the extra’s they provide. So can’t wait to see this!!

  5. Yes! When we went overseas last fall, I was looking for a bag like this here in WINSTON-Salem, but I struck out. Looking forward to seeing how this one takes shape!

  6. Love the idea. I use a small bag similar to this design. It keeps up with a more active lifestyle.
I need room for a water bottle and an easy access pocket on the front for a mace unit or a stun gun. I’m on the trails often and have a need for protection. Maybe just a deep pocket without having to unclip anything to access it.

    • Time will tell if this is the design for you. We normally build many possibilities into our bags, so this just might work!

I love the idea! Looking forward to more development info. Thanks for sharing the process with us.

  8. I absolutely love your new idea! However I have never made a handbag let alone do zippers. All I do is quilt, so I’m wondering if this would be to difficult for me?

  9. Loving this idea!! Yes, water bottle slip a must. 🙂

  10. Intriguing idea. While I have never used a backpack, this might work for me.

  11. I am loving this! I love to carry a sling bag but they are never organized enough. Zipped privacy pouch on outside towards the body, easy access for cash or card. Please, please include pockets on the inside, not necessarily for cards but for pens, tissues things of that nature. Other than that your rough draft has tons of style and I can’t wait to get my hands on the pattern!

I like the idea. I was just asked about a purse
    Like that.
I carry ostomy and allergy supplies at all times and I
    Would like this.

  13. It’s been suggested that, because of shoulder/upper back issues, I use a back pack. I have used a Pacsafe cross-body while travelling overseas and loved it, but it’s too utilitarian(ugly!!) for everyday use. I LOVE the single strap idea. What I would REALLY like is a large(ish) option because I am a larger woman and the (small) RTW back packs look stupid on me!!Apart from that, any security features you could include would be fantastic, especially when wearing on the back.(I wouldn’t keep anything but Kleenex in the front zip because of that.) Great idea,Kat!!

    • I’m so glad to hear that you like our various options so far Aless! Hope you’ll stay tuned for more! 🙂

  14. We are going to Disney this year and this would be the perfect bag! I can’t wait to see more!

  15. I love this idea! I’ve already got similar to this, only it is open instead of having a zipper and no extra pockets. And it’s so small you cannot get anything in it and when you do it falls out. I love your idea better.

  16. Love it! This was what I was asking for. Can you’ve sure to include card slots, bill slot and change purse in a secure location?

    • Hmmm…. as of right now, those items are not in the plans for this bag. We’ll see… we’re still in the planning stages, but I’m afraid it’s impossible to include all things in every design. I promise it will be an interesting design even so!
