PPC17: Familiar Skylines

So…

in our last post last week, I showed you a beautiful Sling Along sample featuring stunning fabric from Katia Hoffman’s “Mystique” collection and I was pleased to see that it seemed you loved it as much as I did!

And today I’m going to show you the Sling Along done up in fabric by a different “Hoffman” altogether, that being Hoffman Fabrics! I fell in love with this fabric from the moment I first saw it for sale in a booth at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival and I immediately knew how I wanted to place it on our new design!

Having grown up in the greater metropolitan area of NYC, I have very fond memories of New York and here’s the deal… while most people might claim the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty as the most iconic landmark in New York, not so for me! As a longtime lover of all things Art Deco, I have always LOVED the Chrysler Building, depicted so beautifully on this fabric!

I knew right off the bat that I wanted to fussy-cut the Chrysler building so it would be the focal point for this sample! And since this piece of fabric displayed the city basically from day into night, I didn’t even try to find any other fabric for the contrast.

I simply used the darker “nighttime” area as my contrast and I featured it most dramatically on the Bag Back, featured above. You might also note that I used our black & white ministriped zippers on this bag. I’ve always maintained that black & white is the perfect neutral and this bag certainly demonstrates my point, no? I can’t imagine what other color (or print) would’ve worked near as well!Β  πŸ™‚

And here’s a good photo of the three storage areas located on the Bag Front! The “drop-down” front pocket is the place I like to store my phone. It’s very easy to hear it ring when its in this area and there’s absolutely zero chance of it falling out when the extended area is buckled in place. The Zipper pocket is perfect for items you want to keep secure like your key fob and wallet, and the Secret Niche area is spacious enough to hold an iPad Air.

And just so you know… I am not the only one in my household who fell in love with this yummy fabric (and here’s one more example of how fantastic black & white looks with this color palette)! If you’d like to play with this fabric or if you just want to add it to your “collection”, it’s called “Skylines”, and it’s from Hoffman Fabrics and there’s actually a couple different colorways available featuring the New York skyline. There’s also a few other city skylines you might recognize in this collection!

So that’s it for now!

We’re in the stretch run now with only ONE more sample left to show you before we need to choose our cover bag! So stay with us… it’s getting ready to get real EXCITING around here!!!

  4. This is gorgeous and is a perfect bag for this fabric.
I’m curious if you are going to have a “manly” sample since this is a unisex pattern. Like brown or camoflauge or a pinstripe…just thinking outloud here.

    • Good question Carolina! I’ve made up as manly a bag as I intend to make (heehee) and I’ll show it to you, but since its not a contender for the front cover of the pattern, I probably wont show it to you until after the pattern cover is announceed. πŸ™‚

  6. Can’t wait for the pattern. Think I will like it as much as my favorite Quarter pattern. Well done!

  7. Love the bag and love the fabric – but I really hate the plastic clip. I think it down grades an elegant bag to a dressed up backpack. Any suggestions for other closures?

    • Thanks for writing Helen and I’m sorry you dont approve of the plastic clip, but of all the things we tried, we liked it best because it was easy to operate with one hand and it was lightweight which is a big deal on a drop down area. You are of course welcomed to change it up and try something else.

This fabric looks Fab-you-Lous. Love it!

  9. Cynthia (azureindigo)

Love it, love it, LOVE IT! This is a perfect bag. Can’t wait for the pattern. You’ve outdone yourself this time!

  10. Responding to Helen’s concern about the plastic clip – there are also metal versions. Perhaps metal would look dressier? For example, I just found the following website that has four different colored metal side release buckles. Note that I’ve never used one so I can’t provide feedback on them. https://www.etsy.com/shop/KraftHausSupply?ref=l2-shopheader-name&section_id=17937575

    • But I would look closely at the weight of the metal clip as it will probably be quite a bit heavier than plastic and Kat commented that the light weight of the plastic clip was a positive thing for this use. However I also spotted some aluminum versions on the web and aluminum is a lighter weight metal.

    • Thanks, Mary. Those clips look much more elegant.

  11. I cannot wait until this pattern comes out! It is absolutely beautiful and unique. I’m looking forward to making this bag.

  12. The fabric is an inspired choice for this amazing bag! I love it! Your best ever, I’m pretty sure!

  13. I love this bag design. This is such a useful style to carry if you are walking long distances and still need to carry β€˜stuff’. I can’t wait to start pulling my fabrics to make one when the pattern is released. Thank you for the heads-up that it is coming soon.

  14. Carol A Hansen

Also waiting for the release! This is a great design for all ages. I can see it for my granddaughters, daughter , and myself.

  15. I love it! Can’t wait to buy the pattern and try it out for myself!!!

  16. Cathy Frauenhoffer

Love the pattern. Is it possible to preorder the pattern?

    • So sorry Cathy, but the system that processes my order doesn’t allow for pre-ordering. If you want to be notified about the release of this pattern, the best way to do so is to sign up for our email newsletter, or to follow us on FaceBook or Instagram! πŸ™‚

  17. I was so excited when I saw this bag Can’t wait, My skyline fabric came yesterday It is so beautiful Will there be a kit to order with the zippers etc ?
