HELLO and Welcome!- Well, here it is, the end of August already, and in NC, that means the start of school. Which reminds me of what one of my neighbors, who just so happens to be a teacher in a local middle school, told me this week. She said that school had been in session about 3 days, and she was having consistent problems with the behavior of "Little Billy". She finally had enough, and phoned Little Billy's Mom to tell her he was misbehaving. And the Mom said, (and I swear I am not making this up) "Wait a minute!, I had Billy with me for 3 months and I never called YOU once, when he misbehaved!"
(Kinda makes you glad you're not a teacher, doesnt it?)

Feline Quote for September -
"Cats can work out mathematically the exact place to sit that will cause the most inconvenience." Pam Brown

A Cool Place to Shop!- Eclectic Threads, Raleigh, NC
There's a new little shop on the internet you might find interesting! Ok, so the owner is my daughter, but I STILL think you could have fun checking this shop out at www.eclecticthreads.thelineberrys.com Erica designs clothing reminiscent of a favorite era of mine... the 60's. I love her color choices and the patchwork designs are great! You can shop the "For Sale" page and see what Erica might currently have made up for sale, or, you can browse through the "Gallery" and get some ideas for a custom made item. Her prices are great for unique work such as this and its a fun shop to visit. You may not be interested in wearing these clothes yourself, but I bet you know someone who is. Maybe you have a niece who's into the retro look and wants something really distinctive for the new school year? Why not suggest shopping at Eclectic Threads , or better yet, why not just surprise them with a unique outfit that makes a style statement other than Old Navy, Gap or Abercrombie?

New at StudioKat Designs-
August saw the release of "The Cordicella", the 5th handbag in the "Bags with Panache" Collection. You can see it yourself, by going to my website, www.studiokatdesigns.com/cordicella.htm . I've been carrying this bag myself for about a month and I enjoy it because I can carry a surprising amount of "stuff" without the look of a cumbersome and bulky bag. It also has exterior pockets for quick access to things like cellphones, keys, etc.
The best part is that its a quick and easy project, with such an interesting finished look, that all of your friends will think you're an expert! Need a fun project to use for teaching? The Cordicella Bag may be just the ticket to keep your student coming back for MORE!

Did You Know?-There's a new contest going on at StudioKat Designs!
That's right, we're having another free drawing during the months of August & September, and the prize is a free original handbag! Go to www.studiokatdesigns.com/Win Free Stuff.htm to check out the details about the handbag and to enter. **Remember**- You can enter the contest every day if you want, to multiply your chances of winning!

"Catsite" of the Month-Meowhoo.com-www.meowhoo.com/club/games
Hey, here's a really fun site to go to when you need a moment to relax, or when you need to get the kids out of your hair for just a bit on a rainy day! It's got lots of fun games for cat lovers, and other stuff too, like downloadable cat wallpapers, stories, and jokes. All in all, a nice stress-reducing site to keep bookmarked for an "emergency"!

A Good Read- (For you AND your cat to curl up with!)

"The Other Side of Love", Dr. Gary Chapman

Now HERE's a practical book everyone can use. Who doesn't know someone who could learn how to effectively process anger a little better? Moi???? Surely you jest! And no, clamming up and playing the quiet game is not any more effective as a means of for processing anger, than explosive ranting is. You'll love Gary's witty and winsome insights into the origins of anger, and into "unlearning" the ways we deal with our own anger and the anger of others. You can pick up a copy of this neat little book, both new and used, on Amazon, or in your local bookstore as well. Gary's got a whole bunch of other books he's written as well. For more information about Gary and his writings, go to www.garychapman.org.

Listen UP!-The Avett Brothers
Are they bluegrass? country? folk rock? rock-a-billy? You decide. One thing is for sure, the Avett Brothers don't fit into anyone's box. Based near here, in Concord, NC, the brothers Avett have built a pretty large following, based on their energetic live shows. They quite honestly blew me away the first time I saw them, and I've been a fan ever since. Anyone who can play a harmonica, a banjo, and something they call "stomp drums" with their feet, all while singing on the chorus, has my complete admiration! (It also doesn't hurt that they are pretty easy on the eyes as well!) Check 'em out at www.theavettbrothers.com to get a taste of their sound and style. It's completely unique from anything you'll hear on regular radio, and you just might become a fan for life.... like me!

Talk to Me-
I am thrilled about the fact that I have had quite a bit of user feedback this month. Some about the website, some about my patterns, but the unbelievable thing is.... the overwhelming amount of user comments have been about, (and I am NOT making this up) my CAT! I don't really know what to think about that! I know one thing though, I sure am glad that Jeter cannot read, or he would be demanding equal billing! He is headstrong enough as it is, without knowing how popular he is becoming. Which seques conveniently into a situation concerning Jeter, that I need help with.
It seems that many of you out there have a LOT of experience with cats, and i am at my wits end about something I cannot break Jeter from doing. You see Jeter LOVES to lounge and prowl about on the kitchen counter tops, and everyone KNOWS this is GROSS! Of course he does this when there is food there, which is not good, but he also does it just for the heck of it. Sometimes I'll turn around from working on the computer, and see him totally sprawled out, sound asleep, taking up what has to be 8 linear feet of counter space. Want to see what I'm talking about? Go to www.studiokatdesigns.com/Jeter.htm to see pictures of Jeter being caught in the act!
So anyway, I was hoping to solicit some advice for a way to break Jeter of this "bad kitty" habit!
here are the things we have tried so far....

  • spanking: Jeter was unfazed at best by this method. We have tried spanking with a fly swatter, and a rolled up piece of paper. He just doesnt seem to "get it". He must think its some kind of kinky game, because he always ends up somehow finding, and bringing us the disciplinary item later on. My guess is, he wants us to throw it for him, since he digs playing fetch so much. So, unless we escalate the spanking to a level to which I am just not comfortable, then spanking is out.

  • removing the stools which provide easy access: Jeter can easily jump up flat-footed, and not being a particularly graceful cat, has knocked numerous items off of our eating area in the process. The kicker was when he virtually landed IN my husbands plate....... while he was eating........and began helping himself!!!!! Yeah, I think this cat might have a deathwish, because my normally mild-mannered husband really takes eating seriously, and will protect his food, and his area of the table like a mother eagle guarding her chicks!

  • spraying him with water: we actually enjoyed a modest amount of success with this method in the beginning. Jeter even got so he would jump off the counter if he even saw me go and get the spray bottle. BUT.... lately, he evidently seems to consider it a wierd game of "chicken". Now, he will resiliently stand his ground on the counter, ears down, eyes closed, mouth open, just taking the spraying until he just cannot stand anymore, at which time he will leap from the counter and shake himself off all over the house. As soon as he dries, he's back, with renewed determination to top his last effort.

  • So as you can see, we need help with our "problem child!" Does anyone out there have any ideas we can try??? I love this cat to bits, but this one behavior is annoying at best, and pretty embarrassing to say the least, when we have company. If so, please go to www.studiokatdesigns.com/Jeter.htm . There'a convenient dialog box under the pictures on which you can easily send me your comments. Or if you would prefer, you can email me at info@studiokatdesigns.com . I am willing to try just about anything that doesnt risk Jeter's health or my being incarcerated!

Monthly Trivia- Now for some fun facts about September. Did you know that September is National SEWING month??? Well I sure didn't, but what a great excuse to spend some extra time sewing! Especially with Christmas around the corner. Don't you have someone on your list that "needs" a cool handbag?

September is also National Piano month, dedicated to the over 20 million players and to encourage piano study for ALL ages. And how about this? I bet you're like me and had no idea that this is also "Healthy Aging month", focusing attention on the positive aspects of growing older..... like maybe starting a 2nd career?? hey, I am for THAT!

September 1st is the birthday of Lily Tomlin, of "Laugh-In fame, (think "One ringy-dingy!....), and Gloria Estefan was born on this day in Havana, Cuba in 1957, (talk about healthy aging!!), and September is also the month in which MY birthday falls!.... it's a few days off though, the 22nd! And if September is also the month of YOUR birthday, that's outstanding! Here's a great big HAPPY BIRTHDAY at ya from StudioKat Designs! And if your birthday is not in the month of September, no problemo. You can celebrate September anyway, by playing around on the piano for a bit, if you know how, or maybe listening to some piano music, if you don't, and by calling up a favorite older person in your life. You'll make their day, and maybe yours too, especially if, while you are dialing, you purse your lips, snort a bit, and say, "one ringy-dingy...... two ringy-dingy's.....!

Well, that's it for now, so until next month, remember!
