October 2005

The StudioKat Designs Newsletter
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

HELLO and Welcome!- Well here it is October already! Actually, the fall of the year has always been one of my favorite times of the year. I like the kind of day that you HAVE to wear a light sweater, or else you are chilly. That's MY kind of weather!
Fall is also the time of year to start thinking about Christmas, if you like making many of your Christmas gifts, as I do. You may need to pick up a couple of purse patterns for the women on your list, or maybe go my links page to see some really cool patterns you might like, by other independent designers, like me! But enough blatant self-promotion, on to the news!
As always, if you prefer, you can go to www.studiokatdesigns.com/dec05.htm to see the html/color version of the newsletter. Just scroll down to the "Archive" section, and click on Oct 05.

Feline Quote for October-
If your cat falls out of a tree, go inside to laugh! Patricia Hitchcock

Stay tuned! I plan on putting up another prize offering THIS WEEK, in order to have a Christmas drawing in early December. The new drawing will officially begin on October 7th, because I will definitely have the webpage complete by then, but, you can enter early if you want to by going to www.studiokatdesigns.com/Win Free Stuff.htm You could win a cool, original gift for a special friend.... or maybe for YOU!

Love Handbags?-The Creative Thimble- Raleigh, NC
I found a GREAT webshop recently, that I know you will really enjoy! The Creative Thimble has a really terrific selection of women's tote patterns. OK, you might be thinking, "Why would StudioKat Designs be promoting a competitors website?" Well, I like to think that us designing gals all support each other, and if my designs aren't quite what you need, then I want to help you support another independent designer who just might be more to your liking!

So anyway, Laura Martell's tote bags are well thought out, and have multiple campartments for carrying all kind of stuff. (You KNOW I like THAT!) My favorite is her Professional Tote, but Her newest pattern, the Kangaroo Tote , is pretty cool, because it fits into its own pouch! You'll never be caught without a tote bag again!
Got questions? I am sure Laura would love to talk to you! You can reach her at sales@thecreativethimble.com. Happy Shopping, but don't forget to come back to StudioKat Designs later!

Did You Know?-Did you know that a dog named Baron ran the 50-yard dash in 4.22 seconds? His legs are 4 inches long. FYI, the record for a human being is 5.15 seconds, set by Canadian, Ben Johnson in 1988. (his legs are 35 inches long.)

Listen UP!-
In view of the recent hurricane disaster in New Orleans, I thought maybe that instead of highlighting a new artist, that you might like to ponder this. Among the roughly 480,000 residents evacuated from New Orleans, perhaps the most conspicuously absent are its musicians. Those who play and promote this most uniquely American music, are now exiled from North Carolina to California. How can we support those who enrich the character of this devastated area as well as that of America?

"The best and easiest way to help ans show support for all of the musicians from New Orleans, is to buy New Orleans music", said Reggie Scanlan, the bassist with the Radiators. Royalty checks will help artists pay their bills. You will also be fortunate enough to listen to their tunes and share them with others.

Basin Street Records is an active local label, featuring keyboard sensation Jon Cleary, trumpet virtuoso Irvin Mayfield, traditional jazz clarinetist Dr. Michael White, and Latin jazz greats, Los Hombres Calientes, among others. Recordings and concert information are available at www.basinstreetrecords.com . "To help exiled New Orleans musicians," company president, Mark Samuels recommends, "downloading their music from sites like www.music.msn.com , www.itunes.com , www.rhapsody.com , or www.disclogic.com . Who knows, you may discover a whole new music genre, to enjoy for a lifetime!

Talk to Me-
Thanks to all who submitted suggestions for breaking Jeter's bad habit of getting on the kitchen counters. Along with some great suggestions, I have read some touching, and sometimes VERY funny stories about your cats.

The suggestions have run the gamut, ranging from getting a female companion for Jeter, (since guys behave better with women around), placing crimped aluminum foil, or double-sided sticky tape in strategic places, to using a loud noise, such as a can of pennies, or an air-horn, to scare Jeter when he gets on the counter.

Well, the girl kitty COULD mean double-trouble, so i tried the crinkled aluminum foil, which Jeter didn't even seem to notice, and the double-sided sticky tape, which only succeeded in tearing holes in the sports section of my husband's (Bubba's) newspaper (a cardinal sin). But I saw my neighbors playing with an airhorn in their front yard after returning from a Carolina Panthers game, so I persuaded them to let me borrow it. I warned Bubba to be on alert, as he was snoozing in front of a baseball game, and took my position in front of the computer, with my air-horn. Sure nuf, here comes Jeter, sashaying into the kitchen, tail held high, looking for trouble. I watched out of the corner of my eye, until he made his move, and pushed the button on the air-horn, at the very second that his little foot touched my counter..........
Well, let me tell you, there should be some kind of warning on those cans, that they should NEVER be used inside a house, because that air-horn emitted a blast that I thought SURELY had cracked the LCD display on my new monitor. I looked up in horror, to catch a glimpse of normally mild-mannered Bubba in a full-length dive from his recliner to the area behind the couch.

When the dust, and the various pieces of his newspaper settled, Jeter was no where to be found. I didn't have to call 911 to revive Bubba, but he said we might have to do so for me, if i ever tried a stunt like that again! As for Jeter, he didnt surface for almost 24 hours. Who knows where he went, but you know what? The next time I saw him, he was lounging on the kitchen counter, as if taunting me to try it again!

I've got household ammonia on my grocery list for this week. I can't try the can of pennies idea just yet, (Bubba might think that they fall in the same category as the air-horn). I'll keep you informed of the outcome.
{PS} There really IS a warning on the air-horn can against indoor usage. (Don't tell Bubba !)

Monthly Trivia- If it's October, then it's time for the WORLD SERIES, one of my FAVORITE times of the year! So how appropriate is it, that October is "National Popcorn Poppin" month, to celebrate the wholesome, economical and natural food value of popcorn, America's native snack?! I'll take mine with butter, America's favorite FAT!, .... but wait, that's another month.

And could it be a coincidence, that October is also "Go Nuts over Texas Peanuts" month, celebrating "America's OTHER perfect spectator food? Anyway, did you know that there are actually FOUR peanut varieties, and Texas is one of only 2 states that grows all of them? My bet is that Georgia is the other state (does anyone out there know for sure?). And speaking of Georgia peanuts, I think it's altogether appropriate, that October 1st is the birthday of Former President and "peanut king", Jimmy Carter. He shares his birthday with Mark McGwire, the St. Louis slugger who in October of 1998, broke Roger Maris' long-standing homerun record of 69 in one season. Of course now, that record is a bit tainted, since Mark will not confirm or deny the rumor that he used steroids to help him grow 38" biceps! Of course it's a moot point now, since San Francisco slugger, Barry Bonds, proceeded to hit 73 homeruns in 2004. But wait.... now Barry won't confirm or deny the same rumor. Hmmmmmm......

So all this leads me back to my point, that if YOUR birthday is also in the month of October, that's GREAT! Congratulations! Have a great day! Maybe grab a bag of peanuts or popcorn, and celebrate it at the ballpark this year! And if October is NOT the month of your birthday, that's OK. You can celebrate it at the ball park too, but choose your seat carefully, on account of you sure don't want to be sitting next to the guy with the AIR HORN!!!

Well, that's it for now, so until next month, remember!
