The StudioKat Designs
Newsletter ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
HELLO and
Welcome!- Hello again and WELCOME to the my August newsletter. After a perfectly delightful spring, I just knew we'd have the devil to pay, and sure enough, July in North Carolina has been horridly hot and humid. Thank God for a good AC and tall glasses of lemonade! Speaking of which, why don't you grab you a glass, get comfy, and remember, you don't HAVE to love cats or purses to enjoy this newsletter... but it sure helps!
New with this addition, you can now find an ordered list of this newsletter's hotlinks at the bottom. (especially for our AOL friends!)
Feline Quote for August -
"There's no need for a piece of sculpture in a home that has a cat." Wesley Bates
New at StudioKat
Designs- I've been working feverishly, (or is that just the humidity making me feel this way?) on my new pattern, the Cordicella Bag. I'm planning on a Labor Day launch for this bag, but you can see some sneek preview pictures of it here! (www.studiokatdesigns.com/cordicella.htm) This has turned out to be one of my personal favorites for everyday. It's roomy, yet not bulky looking, and has plenty of exterior storage. I don't know about you, but I just hear my phone ringing better when it's in an exterior pocket! Anyway, check it out when you have a sec?
Listen
UP!- Rhythmicity ! No, that wasn't a sneeze, but the name of a really cool group of musicians who are the "talk of the town" in Raleigh, NC. They specialize in African & Afro/Cuban drumming, but are currently experimenting with the world music genre by adding other various melodic instruments as well! They've opened the Raleigh dates for such acts as, The Dead (formerly the Grateful Dead), Earth.Wind and Fire, and Chicago and are creating quite a buzz in this area. Besides concerts, they've played for all kinds of events, ranging from footraces, fundraisers, parties, and even provided backgound music for belly dancers. If you need to draw attention to your event, Rhythmicity may be the perfect way for you to do it! Check them out at www.rhythmicity.org to get a taste of their "sound", or better yet, if your in the Raleigh area, be sure to check them out at Turkish Delights on August 13th. They may be just the difference you were looking.... or should I say, listening for!
PlayTime- I know I'm probably giving away my age, but i used to just LOVE "Concentration" when I was a kid. Alright, so it was one of the few games shows on TV then, but all the same, i loved it! Well check out the new game I made for my website! It's Handbag Concentration! (www.studiokatdesigns.com/concentration.htm) You play it against a clock, and no two games are ever the same! Let me know what you think of it!
Love Handbags?- Henrietta's Handbags... in Raleigh, N.C. The purse site I have chosen to spotlight this month is Henrietta's handbags (www.henriettashandbags.com) in Raleigh, NC. Henrietta started her internet business 3 years ago when she could not find any handbags in department stores that really expressed her personality, so she decided to just make her own. (Doesn't this sound familiar? If there's any department store buyers out there.... HELLO!!!! ) Excuse that outburst, but department stores just don't get it, do they! Anyway, like most of us, Henrietta has nurtured a lifelong love of handbags, having grown up watching her Mom make clothing with matching bags for herself and for her family to carry. This love for beautiful and expressive bags is certainly evident in her creations. Go ahead, check her out! Her online business is constantly growing with new additions of purse patterns (www.henriettashandbags.com/purse_patterns1.html), and a line of vintage inspired bags (www.henriettashandbags.com/vintage_bags.html) coming this Fall! You get lots of fun information about handbags on Henrietta's site too. Check out her Handbag Blog (www.henriettashandbags.com/Handbag_News_Blog.html) (especially right now!) or the newsclippings she has found about the history of handbags , or other interesting articles (www.henriettashandbags.com/handbag-articles.html) about what else.....handbags!
On a personal note, Henrietta has been VERY helpful to me, offering practical advice and encouragement, as I was attempting the startup of this website. She's a good internet buddy to have, and she has a fun site, so look her site over when you get a chance?
A NEW Contest!-What FUN we've had with the FabShopHop in July, and WELCOME to the MANY new subscribers to this newsletter! I've gotten to know several 'Hoppers" in the process! But, now that the Hop is over, it's time for a New StudioKat Designs Drawing! Click here (www.studiokatdesigns.com/WinFreeStuff.htm) to see pictures of the Fall Handbag that we're giving away to one lucky person. it could be YOU.
Now THAT'S hot!- If you're like me, you've staggered into the house sometime this month, all sticky and sweaty, and said, "WOW, it's HOT!," for what seems like the hundredth time. You know you're hot, and you're tired of repeating yourself! Sooooooooo, in honor of the 11th 98+ degree day in a row here in NC (with equal humidity), let's look at some other "hot phrases" you can try out. They probably won't make you feel any cooler, but they might make someone smile, and that's pretty cool!
It's so hot that the birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
It's hotter than a steel playground at noon.
It's so hot that I could spit fire.
It's hotter than Georgia asphalt.
It's hotter than the devil's underwear.
It's hotter than a pair of sweatpants full of barbeque.
And my personal favorite...
It's so hot that I saw two trees fighting over a dog!
"Wanted: Purse Paparazzi
"-...(alert readers will note that is repeated from the July 05 newsletter, and yes, I did it on purpose, so all of our new subscribers could participate) :) As part of a upcoming newsletter feature, I am calling for pictures of outrageous handbags. They can be strange, unconventional, laughable, or just plain rot-gut UGLY! If you spot a likely entry, snap a picture! ( i know tons of you have camera phones now! ) But please, BE DISCREET! It has been documented, (and I am NOT making this up) that the #3 weapon of choice for women, regardless of situational danger, is in fact, her HANDBAG!! Soooo, weigh the risk, or perhaps the size of the handbag owner's bicep, or even the injury-potential if the aformentioned handbag, if it were to be used as a projectile, versus any potential you might have for personal gain, before you click. Better to be forewarned than "fore-armed"! (which is incidently, the #5 weapon of choice)
Send the picture, along with your name and hometown, and any other information you think others might enjoy about the occasion on which you spotted this "handbag", to info@studiokatdesigns.com After the entries are compiled, and we've all had a chance to vote, the winners will receive Studiokat Designs gift certificates. So "snap to it" and send in those pics!
Quiltshop
Spotlight-Little Mama's Quilt Fabric & More (www.littlemamas.biz)....in Appling Ga. Isn't this a cool name for a store? Makes you want to find out more doesn't it? Well, here goes.......... Little Mama's Quilt Fabric & More is a little internet business operating out of Appling, GA. What makes this little shop special is the special lines of fabric, offered at really good prices. In particular, check out the Luminosity (www.littlemamas.biz/qf-be-01.html) line of fabrics she is carrying by Benartex. They are gorgeous, and remind me of stained glass windows! My favorite is the Kente Cloth Prints (www.littlemamas.biz/ef-afr-01.html) imported from Africa. I'm trying to think of way to incorporate some of that beautiful fabric into a purse! Glenda also markets a good variety of patterns (www.littlemamas.biz/acc-hb-01.html) from up and coming designers. Look and see if you don't recognize a few? Little Mama's has a periodic newsletter you might enjoy. Here's a copy of her most recent edition for you to sample. Just email Glenda (glenda@littlemamas.biz) to sign up!
August Trivia- I gotta tell ya, August is NOT one of my favorite months, due primarily to the fact that by now I am generally TOTALLY fed up with this heat! But, some pretty cool things have happened in the month of August, (including the birth of my only child) so here goes.MTV made it's debut on August 1st, 1981, forever changing the "face" of music. An unfortunate consequence of the Video Age has been a preoccupation with a musician's "look", rather than their talent. Here's a fun fact you probably did not know. The creation of what would become the WorldWideWeb (www) was first suggested by Tim Berners-Lee & Robert Cailliau at CERN, the European Lab for Particle Physics in Switzerland on Aug. 1, 1990. By October, they had designed a prototype web browser. They also introduced HTML and the URL. I know this runs counter to what Al Gore suggested in his run for the presidency in 1998, but sorry Al, they got there first! August 1, 1942 is also the birthdate of Jerry Garcia, born in San Francisco. Garcia was a musician of remarkable ability and the leading force behind the legendary Grateful Dead, the band that sustained a veritable industry for its legion (the deadheads) of followers. I know all of this is great, but anyone with any sense at all knows that the most important thing that Jerry Garcia ever did, was to invent Ben & Jerry's ice cream! YUM! Make mine Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough please! And if August is also the month of YOUR birthday, that's TERRIFIC! Here's a great big HAPPY BIRTHDAY at ya, from StudioKat Designs! And if your birthday is not in the month of August, no problem. You can celebrate August anyway, by digging out some old Grateful Dead videos, and beating the heat with a great big bowl of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. On second thought, make mine Chunky Monkey!
